Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that Toby Alderweireld “is happy” at the club, despite the constant speculation surrounding the centre-back’s future.
Alderweireld, 28, joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 after impressing during a loan spell with Southampton.
The Belgium international is contracted to his London club until the summer of 2020, but it is understood that he wants wage parity with the likes of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Manchester City and Chelsea were waiting in the wings for Alderweireld, should he decide to seek pastures new.
Pochettino, however, has insisted that the experienced defender is content with life at Spurs.
Pochettino told reporters:
“It is true, there is a lot of rumour in the last few days. He was talking with me in my office this morning. He is happy, he wants to make fully clear his position that he is fully committed to the club.
“He is happy with his contract – two years plus one – but it is not easy. I recognise that in the last few days there have been some rumours but he is so happy and so calm. His idea is to try and play here and he has no reason to move.”
Alderweireld has played every minute of Premier League football for Tottenham in the early stages of the 2017-18 campaign.
Spurs will look to bounce back from a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Burnley before the international break when they travel to Everton on Saturday afternoon.
