Emre Can’s stint at Liverpool has so far been an unpredictable one, with the German often blowing hot and cold in a red shirt. Following Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, Can enjoyed something of a resurgence and was given a regular starting berth for the Reds, but poor performances this season have seen his significance within the Liverpool squad reduce somewhat. He has made 16 starts in the Premier League so far this season, which certainly reflects the downturn in his role at Anfield as of late.ÂThe German was given a chance against Burnley over the weekend, though, and for the best part of 60 minutes – fans were not happy. Slammed for his poor performance, it appeared as though Jurgen Klopp had made a mistake in picking the German from the start.
That perspective certainly changed in the second-half, though, when a stunning finish from Can sealed the three points for Liverpool – with criticism vanishing thereafter. ÂA particularly impressive half an hour followed, and the midfielder certainly proved his worth in the middle of the park.
But was theÂcriticism of the German warranted in the first place? Indeed, when it comes to statistics, it certainly appears as though it was not.
Of course, from the perspective of Jurgen Klopp, Can’s lone goal was his most important contribution on the day. After all, his impressive finish secured an absolutely vital three points for the Reds. But with the German coming out on top of the Liverpool class for successfulÂaerial duels, key passes and tackles, his contribution begins to show through even more clearly.
Indeed, the 60 passes and 5 clearances that he contributed also confirm the contribution that Can made for his side, with a vital performance both defensively and offensively on display from the midfielder.
Emre Can’s goal certainly added a bit of sheen to his performance, but Liverpool can be in debt to the German for more than just the finish – with a clinical performance clearly on display.
